Texas Country House in Rotterdam

We’re gathering the addresses of the best B&Bs, hotels and other overnight locations we can find. All of which, we feel, are great places to go for a weekend or a bit longer. Texas fans who can’t quite make it all the way to the US can stay in a typically Texan country house right in heart of Rotterdam.

What makes it a great place to stay?
It is a little bit of Texas in the heart of Rotterdam. Owner Geert Jan is passionate about small Texan country houses, and built one in his own garden as a result. It’s basic, but everything is carefully thought out. Empty whiskey bottles act as candleholders, and the leather chairs have foot warmers; there are oil lamps, wood for the fireplace, and an axe to chop the wood. You boil your water on a small gas burner and drink your tea out of a jam jar. And when you’re ready to go to sleep, you curl up in a lovely large bed. When the weather’s good, you can even sit on the porch. The whole experience will really make you feel like a cowboy (or girl) out on the ranch, and you’ll (almost) forget you’re in the middle of Rotterdam.

What’s for breakfast?
It’s self-catering so you can make your own, and enjoy it over a jam jar of tea or coffee. Alternatively, head over to Jordy’s, the best baker in Rotterdam, where you have a direct view into the bakery and can see your breakfast croissants come straight out the oven.

Our tip
If there’s a man in your midst, then make sure he goes to Schorem barbers, for an old-fashioned cut and shave. They sometimes have a band playing or crack open a bottle of whiskey. If you prefer something a little more cultural, then pay a visit to the spectacular Kunsthal, where they are holding an exhibition of the street artist Keith Haring until February 7th, 2016.

Good food Scharrels en Schuim serve up delicious chicken and special beers, all in a cool interior.
