Recycled couture by Suzanne Jongmans

Suzanne Jongmans

Bonnets fashioned from Styrofoam, dresses adorned with polystyrene beads, and collars sculpted from bubble wrap: These are just some of the costumes made by artist Suzanne Jongmans.

Once the ‘recycled packaging’ costumes are done, Jongmans then photographs them in portraits that echo those of the 15th to 17th centuries. As theatrical as it is, Jongmans’ work also makes a serious statement about the contrast between today’s mass disposal of materials and an era that made clothes to last.
