Why small talk is so important

small talk

Chatting about the weather, forthcoming vacations or what your weekend was like: We sometimes find small talk so difficult or quite simply, annoying. But it does actually have an important function.

Talking about everyday things that initially seem pointless is a means of getting to know someone better at a party, for example. You learn more about their perspective on small matters, and thereby discover more about the person within. Does someone talk about their feelings easily or not? And what makes the person you’re chatting with happy in life?

This way, you can see small talk as a stepping stone to a deeper conversation: after discussing the everyday, you know which larger topics you can address for a good conversation. The School of Life explains this further in this video.
